Water Crisis Hits Offinso North

26.06.2015 LISTEN
By Cruz FM

Residents of the Offinso North District in the Ashanti Region have expressed frustrations after an acute water shortage hit the area. They have been living without clean water for about a month and this is affecting soci-economic activities in the area.It is also contributing to absenteeism and lateness to school and work in the area where authorities are making strenuous efforts to improve students' performance.

According to the Brong Ahafo Regional Manager of the Ghana Water Company Ltd,Mr. Nkrumah, when Cruzfm News contacted him, he said the problem is as a result of a burst in one of the pipes.

He noted that this is the third time this problem has occurred and wondered why residents of the area are on the neck of the Brong Ahafo sector of the GWCL leaving the Ashanti sector where the monies collected as bills are being sent to.

Mr. Nkrumah indicated that although the GWCL sector of the Ashanti Region had shirk its responsibility to fixing the problem but they have not. However, the civil works have been completed awaiting it to dry to enable water pass through, he said.

He therefore assured residents that by the close of this week, residents will have water pass through their taps.

Meanwhile some of the angry residents in a phone-in-programme on the morning show, Kokorokoo Annex which is hosted by Alhassan Bin Jibril Spelele expressed their anger indicating that they will not welcome anyone from the GWCL to their houses and workplaces to collect bills for the month within which they went through the droughts. The residents however, accused the District Assembly of not prioritizing their interest. When Cruz News contacted the DCE Hon. Samuel Appiah Kubi, he said the Assembly had been active and supportive to the GWCL in fixing the problem.

He recounted how the District Assembly and the Techiman south municipal assembly collaborated in fixing the last problem before this one.

Hon. Appiah Kubi said the Offinso North District Assembly spent about Ten Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHc10000) on their part in fixing the problem.
