Accra, June 24, GNA - The National Media Commission (NMC) on Wednesday inaugurated an eight-member Board of Directors for the New Times Corporation (NTC), with a call on members to make staff welfare and provision of facilities for the business, a priority.

Mr Kabral Blay-Amihere, Chairman of the Commission who inaugurated the Board, said the new management of the Corporation should focus on generating resources to ensure the sustainability and development of the Newspaper.

He said: 'Workers of NTC, in my view, have a genuine case to ask for improved conditions, but must come to terms with the situation the Corporation finds itself in today.

'Staff must acknowledge the challenge that the new Board faces,' stressing that 'the way forward is that Management and Staff must focus on how to revive the fortunes of NTC'.

The Chairman asked stakeholders of the Corporation to clearly understand that the Managing Director and Chairperson of the Board were appointed with a clear mandate to ensure the sustainability and independence of the Corporation.

He tasked the management to start a conversation on what strategies must be taken collectively, to make sure that both Ghanaian Times and Weekly Spectator became newspapers of relevance and influence.

'It is time to reproduce writers and reporters at Ghanaian Times and Spectator whose by-lines are recognizable by the reading public, by-lines that boost sales,' he said.

Mr Blay-Amihere noted that although Article 173 of the 1992 Constitution clearly states that the NMC shall not exercise any control or direction over the professional functions of a person engaged in the production of newspapers or other means of communication, it does not mean the Commission will take its hands totally off the Management of the Corporation.

Mrs Rose-Margaret Kpodo, Chairperson of the newly inaugurated Board, assured the Commission and Management of the Corporation that, they were not there to seek their individual interests, but to work in the interest of the organisation.

'We promise that we will carry on from where you left off and endeavour to bring your lofty plan of transforming NTC into a credible, viable and sustainable media business to fruition,' she said.

Mrs Kpodo urged the Commission to partner them to achieve a shared vision for the betterment of the organization and all its stakeholders.

'The road to our destination may not be smooth all through, but with perseverance, hard work, discipline, and above all the grace of God, we will together definitely get there,' she said.

Other members of the Board are: Mr Nicholas Kodzo Akyire, Mrs Ivy Ruby Oston, Mr Collins Benjamin Essamuah, Mr Zakaria Tanko Musah, Mr Andrew Danso-Aninkora, Mrs Sheila Minka-Premo, and Ms Carol Annang.

Professor Omane Antwi, out-going Board Chairman of the Corporation expressed the hope that the new Board would build on the foundation they set up, and take the institution to the Promised Land. GNA
