Court Sentences A Gold Buyer For Defrauding Businessman

Tarkwa Circuit Court has sentenced a 40yrs old Gold buyer in the sum of one hundred (100) penalty unit equivalents to GHC1,200.00 or in default three (3) years I.H.L for defrauding a Businessman.

The accused person, Emmanuel Quaicoo alias Wofa pleaded guilty and he was convicted on his own plea.

Presenting the fact, Detective Chief Inspector Oscar Amponsah told the court presided over by His Honor Mr. Michael Cudjoe Ntumy deputies as His Honor Mr. Alex Obeng Asante on leave that the complainant Edward freeman is a businessman dealing in Gold buying and resident of Cyanide, a suburb of Tarkwa whiles the accused person is also a Gold buyer and resident of Asankragwa.

He narrated to the court that on 31st of May this year, at about 9:00 am, the accused approached the complainant and collected an amount of GHz 20,000.00 with the pretext of supplying him Gold in two days time. At that given date, the accused did not show up.

On the phone call, the accused told the complainant he used the money to buy Gold which later turns out to be false. The complainant became suspicious.

The prosecutor said on 4th June, this year , complainant traced the accused person at his resident at Asankragua and during confrontation, the complainant retrieved Gold worth at GHz 5,126.00 and cash sum of GHz 3,391.00 from the accused leaving over the balance of GHz 11,485.00.

Detective Chief Inspector Oscar Amponsah said the accused was arrested by Asankragwa Police and handed over to the Tarkwa Police.

Accused admitted the offence in his cautioned statement and stated that, he was in need of money to repair his machine for his gold business hence his lies to the complainant.

After investigation, he was charged with the offence and arraigned before court.
