An Australian based Ghanaian Mr. Habib Iddrisu has won one of the keenly contested NPP Primaries in the Northern Region in absentia.

Mr. Habib won the Sagnarigu Constituency NPP Primaries with 239 out of the 370 total votes cast followed by Alhaji Wahab 99 votes and the former parliament candidate of the constituency Sheikh Abdul Karim got only 29 votes.

In percentages terms Habib Iddrisu had 65% of the votes, 27% for Alhaji Wahab and 8% for Sheikh Abdul Karim respectively.

The victory of the Australian based Ghanaian have sent strong signal and shivers down the spine of the ruling NDC in that constituency where many have already tip Mr. Habib Iddrisu to win the Sagnarigu seat for the NPP.

The three Constituencies in the Tamale Metropolis including Tamale South, Tamale North and Tamale Central, undoubtedly according to pundits are NDC party babies and a no-go area for any political party especially the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The Sagnarigu Constituency which was created out of the Tamale North in the last general elections is again a strong hold of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) but however, there is a strong conviction with the emergence Mr. Habib Iddrisu that the NPP can claim the Sagnarigu seat in the 2016 general elections.

Many pundits even before the elections predicted in favour of the Australian based Ghanaian with the belief that for the NPP to win the Sagnarigu Constituency delegates will have to entrust the constituency in the hands of Mr. Habib Iddrisu, reiterating that, the party needs a youthful, intelligent, energetic, respectful, kind and a resourceful person to do the work for the NPP in 2016 elections.

Speaking to delegates after the elections, a polling station chairman, Mohammed Fuseini insists that the Australian law student was the right choice and urged the other contenders to support him to succeed.

He said, the party will work hard to clinch victory from the NDC and advice the newly elected parliament candidate (Habib Iddrisu) to bring everybody on board, saying “We have to unit to win the Sagnarigu seat”.

Mr. Habib Iddrisu, a policy developer and law student before his election was the branch Secretary of NPP in Australia.
