The Joyce Ababio College of Creative Design (JACCD), an Accra-based state-of-the-art fashion and design institute, has partnered the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training to launch its first electronic learning portal.
The fashion design portal, believed to be the first of its kind in the country, is designed, to, among other things, enable fashion designers, students and the general public to gain the desired fashion design skills to strengthen the Ghanaian fashion industry as well as to promote entrepreneurship and capacity building.
Speaking at the unveiling of the portal last Friday in Accra, Joyce Ababio, a household name in the Ghanaian fashion industry who doubles as the president of JACCD, indicated that the E-learning portal is aimed at bringing fashion design to the doorstep of individuals of diverse professional backgrounds who are passionate about the field of fashion design and aspire to learn from anywhere they find themselves.
Giving details about how the E-portal operates, she stated that interested learners would have to register and select a course online which lasts between six to eight weeks.
According to her, courses available for the E-portal include pattern drafting, pricing and costing, branding, fashion art and illustration, among others.
“Lecturers will be available to chat with students once a week,” she said and added that “lecture time will be communicated with students.”
Commenting on the rationale for introducing the portal, she reiterated that the vision of JACCD has been to advance the Ghanaian fashion design industry.
She indicated that the fashion industry is a multi-billion dollar business around the world, however, “there is still a lot to do with the industry in Ghana.”
Minister of Education, Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, in a brief remark to declare the portal officially launched, commended Ms Ababio for continually contributing to the progress of the nation’s fashion industry.
She pointed out that Ms Ababio’s interest in the industry over the years had remained to address what she termed as the critical issues affecting the advancement of the sector.
