Antananarivo (AFP) - An alliance of Madagascan lawmakers "demanded" early elections late Friday as the country's constitutional court assessed whether an impeachment attempt against the president could go ahead.

"We demand early presidential elections whatever the outcome of the decision taken by the High Constitutional Court," the Republican Alliance of Madagascar, or ARMADA, said in a statement.

The country's parliament voted overwhelmingly two weeks ago to dismiss President Hery Rajaonarimampianina for alleged constitutional violations and general incompetence in the Indian Ocean state.

Rajaonarimampianina challenged the legality of the move in a stand-off that threatens to revive the political chaos that erupted after a coup in 2009, labelling it an "institutional coup d'etat".

On Friday night, the island nation was still awaiting the verdict on whether the impeachment process could go ahead.

If the court does not agree, the parliamentarians have no means of forcing an early ballot just 18 months after the last vote.

President Rajaonarimampianina, a trained accountant, came to power in 2013 elections, vowing to end the turmoil that followed the 2009 coup.
