JUN 1, 2015 LISTEN

Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, has denied claims that the party's upcoming parliamentary primaries scheduled for Saturday, June 13, 2015, has been suspended.

The response follows speculations that some aspirants either intend to petition or have petitioned the party against their disqualification from the race during the vetting process, coupled with the seeming tension in the party.

However, the notice of polls which was supposed to be made public last Thursday, has still not been served – with barely 12 days to go.

But Nana Obiri Boahen told Daily Guide yesterday, 'It will come on as scheduled; I can say with a degree of certainty that all things being equal, it's coming on.

'To the best of my knowledge, no petition has been received to that effect; if any was received on Saturday or Sunday, that I can't tell, but as I was leaving the party headquarters in Accra last Friday, there was nothing like that.'

According to him, no such decision had been taken by the leadership of the party and so any such speculations should be disregarded.

Left to him, the parliamentary primaries should come on to douse the tension in the party, whiles calling for cool heads to prevail in the NPP.

Director of Elections, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, is also reported to have told Radio Ghana that the primaries would be executed successfully.

In spite of the confusion in the party, Martin said its (party’s) administrative work had not ceased, and did not see any direct link between the current challenges of the political grouping and the upcoming primaries.

He therefore asked all aspirants who have been cleared to gird their loins for the primaries, since there is no change in date.

He said any such decision would be communicated to the aspirants and the public by the leadership of the party.

Until then, he has asked all not to give credence to the speculations about the change in date.
