​Upper Manya-Krobo: ‘Pupils Can Also Become Scholars If They Are Retained In Village Schools’—Asst Director Of Education

Friday May 29, 2015, Asesewa: The Assistant Director of Education for Upper Manya-Krobo; Mr Phillip Odonkor Angmor, has said one of the bane of quality education in the district is the frequent transfer of pupils from schools in the villages to those in the urban areas, adding that “Pupils can also become scholars if they are retained in village schools”.

He is therefore urging all parents to retain their wards in the village schools since according to him “Pupils in the village schools are also brilliant and can also be brilliant”.

The Assistant Director of education gave this suggestion when he was the guest speaker during a large gathering of chiefs, parents, school pupils and their teachers at Aketebuor; a village near Otrokper in the Upper Manya-Krobo District last Sunday when the Kloma Hengme Association embarked on its Rural Support Project in the village.

Speaking further on the transfer of pupils, he said parents always have the practice of always transferring their wards to schools in the urban areas upon realizing that he/she is brilliant, and this must be stopped since he himself is a product of a village school.

Mr Angmor also said that rushing school children into early marriages, lack of unity between parents and teachers, delays in arrival of chalks and other stationeries from Accra, low staff of teachers in schools, child labour , and the schools under trees phenomenon are seriously militating against good equality education in the district.

In support of Education in the District, the Chairman of the Kloma Hengme Association; Isaac Tamatey Otu, on behalf of the Association donated a number of text and exercise books, mathematical sets, pens and pencils, and other educational materials to all the pupils present at the program.

Kloma Hengme; a Krobo advocacy and Heritage association, organized the durbar in the village to embark on its rural support program dubbed “The Kloma Hengme Rural Watch Project” to undergo a health screening exercise, organize an educational workshop to parents and pupils, donate agricultural and farm inputs to the farmers, donate educational items to pupils, and also distribute clothes and household items to the people. Steps have also been taken to raise government and national attention to provide electricity, health posts, rehabilitate the deteriorated road network to the viilage, and also provide other infrastructure facilities to the community.

Blukum, a neglected village in Yilo-Krobo and another village in Lower Manya-Krobo are also next beneficiaries of this rural support project of the Association in the coming weeks
