MTN Ghana Foundation launches awards for teachers

Accra, May 28, GNA - As part of measures to enhance the skills of teachers, MTN Ghana Foundation has launched the 'MTN Teachers' Improvement Awards Programme' to professionally improve themselves in science, mathematics and English education in Accra.

Mr Samuel Koranteng, Acting Corporate Services Executive, MTN said these subject areas play an important role in the development of the society by creating advantages in innovation free thinking graduates.

He said education breaks new frontiers in every society and the opportunity to refuel is a key component in upgrading teachers to do great work in schools.

The Acting Corporate Services Executive said the programme was aimed at helping improve the capacity of teachers in chosen disciplines at tertiary institutions in the country.

'This will improve and upgrade the skills of the teachers and such an improvement, the company believes will greatly impact the human resource base of the country,' he added.

Mr Koranteng said the programme would financially assist teachers, who teach in first and second cycle public institutions to upgrade their education up to first degree and Masters Levels.

He said the Foundation is committing an amount of GH¢125,000 as awards to 20 teachers this year.

He encouraged teachers to take advantage of the awards programme to help contribute towards providing students with the tools to transform and to build a strong nation.

He expressed the hope that beneficiaries of the programme would come back equipped with higher educational skills to transform the realities of the classroom as the situation was today.

Mr Stephen Adu, Acting Deputy Director-General, Ghana Education Service commended MTN Ghana for their efforts to improve on the skills of teachers in those subject areas.

He expressed the hope that the programme would go a long way to improve of the skill of the beneficiary teachers, who would then impact it on their students.

The Awards programme is opened to teachers first and second cycle public institutions with requirement, including the applicant being a Ghanaian, must have a minimum of five years teaching experience and must be bonded to remain in the teaching service for minimum of five years after completion of the programme.

The applicants must also not be older than 50 years at the time of application and must have qualified for admission to either University of Cape Coast or University of Education Winneba.

The applicants also have until June 25, to submit their applications, meanwhile it is opened to both regular and sandwich students.
