Police Probes Tamale Shooting

The Northern Regional Police Command has commenced investigations into the alleged shooting incident at a popular New Patriotic Party (NPP) base known as 'Popular Office’ in Tamale by two unknown gunmen.

Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) ASP Ebenezer Tetteh disclosed that the complainant, one Alhassan Mohammed Awal, had officially lodged a complaint with the police and that the police are currently trying to identify those behind the shooting.

It is unclear if the incident has a direct link to the ongoing impeachment process being carried out across the country against the embattled National Chairman, Paul Afoko and his General Secretary, Kwabena Adjei Agyepong.

ASP Tetteh disclosed to DAILY GUIDE that the police administration was only interested in the criminal aspect of the case as the ban on persons possessing weapons in the region was still in force.

He assured the public of the readiness of the police administration to protect them and assured the complainant that the police would get to the bottom of the matter.

'As I speak to you, we are in a meeting with the complainant to establish a few facts that could aid in investigations in order to arrest the culprits,' he stated.

The incident which happened late Monday night was immediately brought under control by the police but supporters in the area have said they are living in fear as this could trigger some violence.

Leader of the group, Alhassan Mohammed Awal, indicted that the last time a similar incident occurred during the National Delegates Conference held in Tamale, it resulted in several injuries and some persons had to be hospitalised.

He appealed to the security agencies to step up efforts to apprehend those behind the shooting and indicated that he would not be surprised if it was done by members of his own party.

He disclosed that the two armed men on motorbikes rode into a dark place near the meeting venue and begun firing shots at them because they were perceived to belong to the camp of embattled NPP National Chairman Paul Afoko and General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong.

'We don't believe it is our opponent; we believe it is within our party. We have received threats (messages) from some people who think we are against Akufo-Addo,' Awal said.

No one was injured as the gunmen reportedly missed all their targets.
