Buhari’s rejection of Rolls Royce in London is good

Feature Article Buharis rejection of Rolls Royce in London is good
MAY 26, 2015 LISTEN

After pledging to promote accountability in governance, General Mohammadu Buhari the President Elect of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has began charting the path that would inure to the benefit of the ordinary people of Nigeria and the Nigerian economy.

The Army General and former military leader of Nigeria began by serving notice to all those to be appointed to Ministerial Positions to get prepared to declare their assets while assuming office and do so when they are leaving office. By this it is quite clear that he (GENERAL BUHARI) would declare his assets before assuming office. This to my knowledge does not happen in any of the member states of Africa Union who have been paying lip service to fighting corruption through accountability, probity and transparency.

Apart pressing home the need for assets declaration by members of his government he did something in London that must be taken into consideration by all well meaning people in Africa and the world over.

While on a recent trip to London General Buhari rejected an offer to ride in a Rolls Royce when he landed at the Heathrow airport on a private visit.

It happened that after exchanging pleasantries with the embassy officials led by the High Commissioner, Dr Dalhatu Tafida, the president-elect politely told them that his visit was strictly private and he had made arrangement for all his needs while in the UK.

He reportedly thanked them for the warm reception and quickly hopped into a less flamboyant car he had arranged for and drove out of the airport.

A source said: “It appeared he was uncomfortable with the number of exotic cars in the convoy.

“Hard as the stunned diplomats present tried to convince him, he refused to bulge, insisting that since he did not inform the Commission of his visit because it was not an official trip, hence he was not entitled to such grandeur.”

Buhari left the High Commission and went over to have discussions with the British prime minister over ways of overcoming the threats of the Boko Harram in Nigeria and other important issues.

The step taken by the president elect in rejecting the succulent offer by the Nigerian High Commission though unusual is good. It would serve notice to all government officials in and outside Nigeria that he would not condone corrupt practices that would involve him. In much the same way he would only allow arrangements done in accordance with acceptable norms in governance. He is right for since he has not been sworn in as president he cannot accept an offer from a High Commission of the current and outgoing government. From now on all African leaders must follow the footsteps of General Buhari by rejecting some unapproved offers to be able to whip all their underlings in line We say kudos to General Buhari. Continue working this way in order for you to be able to bring to book wrong doers in future in Nigeria.
