Mortal remains of the late Upper East Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adams Mahama, were laid to rest at Yekena, a suburb of Bolgatanga over the weekend, in the presence of hundreds of mourners and dignitaries.

The burial of the late Mr Mahama, a Muslim, was delayed for two days at the request of the flagbearer of the party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his running mate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who wanted to pay their last respects to the departed party loyalist.

For the first time in many years, leaders and supporters of the various political parties in the Upper East Region came together to mourn a fallen politician, whose contribution to the development of the youth and women was not limited to members of his party alone.

For some mourners, Adams Mahama was a philanthropist and a businessman, who became a politician to show that politics was not all about political party activities or interests, but the welfare of the ordinary people at the grassroots.

The remaining nine Regional Chairmen of the New Patriotic Party shed tears in silence when the body of their late colleague was brought to the family house for prayers and for the dignitaries to pay their last respects.

The Regional Chairmen, through the Volta Regional Chairman, Peter Amewu, recounted their lives with the late Adams Mahama.

According to Peter Amewu, the late Adams Mahama was a strong force whose attraction brought Regional Chairmen together as friends who could stand for each other in times of trouble.

They said the tragic death of Adams Mahama had rather strengthened them to work harder to ensure that the New Patriotic Party wins the 2016 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections to promote the love and selfless support he extended to the poor and ordinary people of the Upper East Region.

Dignitaries at the Burial service included Nana Akufo-Addo; Dr Mahamudu Bawumia; the NPP's First Vice Chairman, Freddie Blay; Minority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu; Upper East Regional Minister, James Tiigah Zuugah; his Deputy, Daniel Syme; former and incumbent DCEs and MCEs and Ministers, former National and Constituency Executives of the NPP.

The Upper East Regional Chief Imam, Alhaji Yussif Adam, who officiated the final prayer session, prayed for peace and good health for the family as well as unity in the NPP, of which Adams Mahama was Upper East Regional Chairman.

At the Ramsey Park, the final prayers lasted longer than many expected, which some spiritualists interpreted as a sign of painful departure for the deceased.

On Wednesday May 21, 2016, the deceased Regional Chairman had met some persons from the Bawku area for peace talks following the incident that saw the party youth demonstrating, and expressing their displeasure against the NPP National Chairman, Paul Afoko and General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong.

He had also visited the Member of Parliament for Talensi, Tongo Rana, Naba Robert Mosore Doameng at Tongo for a discussion over some developments in the area.

A lady who collapsed on the day Adams Mahama died was heard saying the late chairman had promised to help her clear a debt and that he had asked her to call him on Thursday, May 21, 2016.

It was a solemn moment for all dignitaries, the NPP flagbearer and his running mate, party chiefs and members, beneficiaries of his philanthropic gestures and the family.
