Mr Richard Quarshigah
Keta, May 24, GNA - Mr Richard Quarshigah, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Keta, has donated 1,000 copies of the 'The-Cockcrow', a Junior High School (JHS) Literature in English book, to the Keta Municipal Education Directorate, at separate functions at Keta and Abor.

The total cost of the books amounted to GH¢ 10,430.00.

Each of the 37 recipient schools will have 26 copies of the book, a compilation of short stories, poems and a play.

In the package are 37 copies of teachers' commentary on the book.

The-Cockcrow is the prescribed book for the 2016 BECE.

Presenting the books, Mr Quarshigah decried the poor reading capacities of pupils in the country and said it was the cause of the general dwindling standards in schools.

Mr Quarshigah said Volta Region could not afford the decline in educational standards, as it had very little natural resources, and urged all in the area to sit up.

He said children were the future hope of the region and so if they should continue to perform poorly in school, then the region was doomed.

The MP said a radio quiz competition on the book between schools in the area would held later, and that, the best performing schools, would be rewarded as motivation.

Mr Raphael Kwashie, the Keta Municipal Director of Education said even though the book would be used for the 2016 BECE, the Keta Municipal area had not received any copy, though some districts have them, and commended the MP for the timely gesture.

He appealed for similar donations from other well meaning people to ease the logistics constraints facing education delivery in the municipal area.
