Adams Mahama's family demands justice after burial

The family of the slain Upper East regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party wants some party leaders out of the opposition party.

The family accuses some unnamed members of the NPP of undermining and frustrating Mr. Adams Mahama, throughout his reign as chairman of the NPP in the region.

Delivering an emotionally charged speech after the burial of Mr. Mahama, the spokesperson for the family, Mr. Rockson Bukari, appealed directly to the flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo to personally intervene and get the perpetrators of the attack on their brother out of the NPP.

He alleged that the persons who orchestrated the tragic acid attack on the charismatic young chairman leading to his death Thursday morning must be flushed out of the party.

Mr. Bukari said removing the sponsors of Adams Mahama’s attack is a first step towards building a more cohesive, united party.

Some unknown assailants, midnight Wednesday doused Mr. Adams Mahama with acid leading to his death a few hours later at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital.

The motive for the murder is unknown but only last week, there was a violent confrontation in the Upper East Region which resulted in the scuttling of a planned meeting between the party National chairman and general secretary and other regional executives of the party.

Adams Mahama had indicated he was not aware of the planned meeting and wondered why the two national executives will organise a party meeting in his region, with his executives and would not inform him about it.

Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyepong were said to have lodged an assault complaint with the Upper East police but also indicated that Adams Mahama was well aware of the meeting.

The controversy caused a bit of a stir in the party and was being investigated by the party until Wednesday night's acid attack on late chairman.

One of the two suspects, Gregory Afoko, who is said to be a brother to Paul Afoko is in police grips.

The news about the death of the party chairman has left many shocked and has also led to some attacks especially in the Upper East Region.

Saturday morning whilst preparations were underway to bury Chairman Adams as he is popularly called, a group of protesters besieged the hospital morgue with placards calling for the resignation or removal of Messrs Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyepong.

The two were not at the funeral because they are suspected of having played a role in Adams’ attack.

They both have issued separate statements condemning the murder.

But whilst not mentioning names, Rockson Bukari pointed accusing fingers at some party leaders whom he said must be removed without delay.

NPP flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo who cut his trip to Europe short and came back to Ghana for the funeral, said the party should huddle together in solidarity at this difficult moment.

He said the party had lost an irreplaceable comrade and that his death must not be in vain.

If the late Adams had any wish, it was for the NPP to win power in 2016, he said, and rallied every true member of the party to honour Adams’ memory by working hard towards securing victory for the party in the 2016 elections.

Nana Akufo-Addo assured the family that the party will continue to stand with them; “You will not lack or want,” he assured.
