Education Parents urged to motivate children to learn
MAY 22, 2015 LISTEN

Kofi Kwei (G/A), May 22, GNA - Parents and guardians have been urged to show much commitment to their wards' education and help fight waywardness and hooliganism among the youth.

Speaking at a special forum organised by parents and teachers of Kofi Kwei area in the Ga South Municipality at Kudeha, Mr Anthony Kwaku Amoah, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ghana Schools Project, an NGO, advised parents, guardians and community elders to co-operate with the school, in order to provide holistic education to children, whom he described as "tomorrow's leaders".

Mr Amoah said it would be unfair and inappropriate for any parent or guardian to dump the task of providing quality education to pupils on teachers alone, adding, "It must be a collective effort of all stakeholders, including parents".

The PRO, who is also a teacher and a school counselor, told the participants to motivate their children to perform well, stating: "If we can praise our children for what they have done well and coach them on how to do things well, they will always give us good results to be proud of".

He advised parents to study their wards well and provide them with appropriate guidance services that would prevent them from engaging in pre-marital sex, drug abuse and other anti-social practices, which according to him: "are serious enemies to good quality education."

Mr Pius Kwamivi Fiakuna, assembly member for the Kofi Kwei Electoral Area, expressed concern about the high rate of child delinquency and teenage pregnancy in the area, and appealed to residents to join hands in arresting the situation.

"Our farm lands are being destroyed every now and then, and there are no jobs in the area. The only way we can come out of this sorry situation of ours is to educate our kids to ensure that they secure good paying jobs in future. We should not sit aloof as our children go wayward", he said.

Mr Saibu Bashiru, a parent, expressed gratitude to teachers for their performance, and urged them to continue to train their children in the right manner.

He asked the participants to uphold discipline and allow teachers to perform their function of training children in the right way. GNA
