NPP NPP suffering from rule of personalities; get back to rule of law - Aseidu Nketia
MAY 22, 2015 LISTEN

General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) is advising the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to stamp the rule of law in the party following the tragic attack on a regional party chairman, Adams Mahama.

Aseidu Nketia says the party should be built around the party’s constitution and not around personalities.

"If they are not careful rule of law will break down in the internal affairs of the party and that is dangerous for all of us......from the outside, I see that there appears to be a rule of personalities within NPP at this stage. They should all come together and move away from that one", Aseidu Nketia advised.

The NPP is undergoing an inquisition following the death of Upper East regional chairman Adams Mahama after two assailants attacked him with acid midnight Wednesday.

Some agitated youth in the Upper East region on hearing the news of the chairman’s death vandalized a car conveying second regional vice chairman of the party.

Leading personalities including the 2016 flagbearer Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo have condemned the attack and called for calm within the party.

Many in the party feel Adams death is as a result of politically motivated violence.

Some leaders are calling for the resignation of chairman Paul Afoko and General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong.

Paul Afoko’s junior brother has been arrested on suspicion that he is one of two assailants.

Weighing in on the troubling developments, NDC General Secretary says the tragedy is a result of growing impunity.

He warned against politicising the tragic incident and called for greater sensitivity from stakeholders while discussing the matter.

According to him, the signs were on the wall when he witnessed two motorbike riders drive through a crowd and fire shots in apparent lawlessness during NPP's national delegates congress in Northern regional capital, Tamale.

“When the issue came out their communicators were quick to blame the NDC so nothing got done”, he recalled.

He had hoped the party would deal with it but heard of no action by the national leaders.

Later after the congress to elect new leadership, Aseidu Nketia referred to political violence at the NPP headquarters of the party when some party members attacked the chairman and General Secretary during a press conference.

“Again we did not hear any punitive action either from their party structure or the National Security apparatus”, he said.

Continuing the catalogue of politically motivated violence, he said just before the tragic murder of Adams Mahama, another round of violence preceded it when Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyepong were attacked by some youths in the Upper East region.

Aseidu Nketia says he has noticed that when one section of the party rise against the leadership after they take major decision and this could be a sign that personalities are ruling the party not the law as stated in the party’s constitution.

The popular General Secretary wants the NPP national executives led by Paul Afoko to be logical not emotional in trying to solve the problem.

"There is a tendency for individual leaders to listen to their hearts more than their minds. If they do that they will not solve the problem", the noted.
