NPP UK Condemns Petroleum Price Increases
18.05.2015 LISTEN

The NPP UK condemns unreservedly the ridiculous 9% increases in petrol, kerosene and other petroleum products at a time the country is going through a period of severe economic crisis with power cuts all over the place. It is really absurd and wicked to do this without any proper consultation with labourrepresentatives, parliament and civic society.

The timing of this increase smacks of a carefully planned and calculatedstrategy to fool Ghanaians. This is not the first time the government deliberately puts up prices of petrol and other products over the weekend, hoping that come Monday they would enough time to do damage limitation or put a spin to the increases.

The sad effect of these increases is that food prices, lorry fares, school fees, electricity and water bills and the general cost of living in the country which is really hurting Ghanaians will just get worse.

The AGI recently announced that 13,000 jobs have been lost .The additional cost of procuring these products for business will force employers to lay off more workers .These increases in petroleum prices are unjust and insensitive.

President Mahama must be blamed for the terrible way in which the government is being run. He has no compassion or sympathy for the ordinary Ghanaian. He must call to order the National Petroleum Authority which is really out of order and out of control.

The government’smanagement of the economy leaves a lot to be desired. When they took office in 2009 the exchange rate was 2.2 Ghana cedis to the pound .The exchange rate today is 6.1 Ghana cedis, an appalling rise of almost 200%!

This government has been on a corruption spree never seen in the history of governance in Ghana. Over 27 billion dollars of loans sourced by President Mahama and the NDC cannot be traced neither can they show what they have used these monies for . They have put this country on an IMF Bailout programme after going to the Senchi resort to feast on fried rice and stewwith expensive bottles of wine and whisky as well as sleeping in 400 dollars a night suites .They cannot even produce the firereport, months after they had set up a commission to investigate fires last year.

We call on all Ghanaians to reject these obnoxious increases and call on the NDC Government to sit down and not only scrap these increases but reduce the prices of petroleum products since the world price of oil is at its lowest for years.
