One of the oldest tradition in Ghana is chieftaincy, it is practiced all over the country. The institution is model on hierarchy and has developed over the years to co-exists and run alongside the democratic structure of the country perfectly.

It is enshrine in the Ghanaian constitution that it must be respected. The highest on the list is the King, then comes the Paramount Chiefs till the rank of development chief, in the Akan tradition known as “Nkosuohene”.

Chieftaincy predominantly is by heritance (members of the royal family) are the only people entitle to the throne. Today however, unquenchable taste of title, greed and disloyalty, disrespect for authority, and bribery has recently brought the institution into pandemonium with countless chieftaincy disputes all over the country.

That said and done, Chiefs in modern societies are to be tools of development, instrumental in bringing peace and stability to their subjects. They are supposed to be neutral politically and champion unity in their various communities. The very good and few ones are moving their people forward, whilst majority of them are busy selling and re-selling lands and properties.

Ghanaians, travel worldwide with the chieftaincy practice. Many though, think it is inappropriate and tarnishing the image of the institution… I regret to disagree with them.

Biblically it is correct.
Deuteronomy 17:14-15 King James Version (KJV)

14 When thou art come unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell therein, and shalt say, I will set a king over me, like as all the nations that are about me;

15 Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the LORD thy God shall choose: one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee: thou mayest not set a stranger over thee, which is not thy brother.

We are entitle to choose one of us to lead us in a foreign land, were I agree with critics entirely is limiting the leadership to funerals, parties, obituaries and outdooring. And also quality of people we choose to lead us outside the country.

Since the succession is not obligatory, we must choose people with substance, vision and the ability to move us forward. Think of education, our Businesses, the Youth and having the Skills and Knowledge to represent us at governmental level and have the ability to think for us.

A section of the Ghanaian community is currently unsatisfied about the numerous installation of chiefs.

TopAfric was privileged to seek clarification on the subject from Nana Mprengo, Queenmother of Bohyen in the Ashanti region of Ghana and chairwoman of the “Mprengo Needy Foundation”, she commands great respect amongst Ghanaian in Hamburg.

TopAfric: Nana AgyeiwaaKodie has been installed as the new “Mmabaawahemaa” of Hamburg, why her and not the other ladies around.

Nana Mprengo: The position has been vacant for years, we asked at social gatherings if people are interested, the newly installed Nana Bresiam I showed interest. She was then introduced to the chiefs who after interviewing her accepted her to lead the ladies as a Queen.

TopAfric: Did you endorsed her?
Nana Mprengo: Yes I did, because she is respectful and enlighten, she is hardworking, married, though not perfect most people had nothing against her leading the ladies. I am very confident she is going to be a good queen.

The outdooring and dedication ceremony is taking place on Saturday, the 16th of May 2016 at the “Gesamtschule” Alter Teichweg 200 in Hamburg. The event begins at time is 21pm. The general public is cordially invited.

TopAfric wishes her all the best and encourage her not to be a seating queen... be determined to live a legacy, there are many areas one can make a meaningful impact in society.
