Accra, May 6, GNA - West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has presented 14 computers and accessories worth GH¢25,145 to the National Blood Service, Ghana (NBSG).

The donation of the 10 Toshiba brand new laptops and four HP desktops is to help support a project the Blood Service is undertaking to improve the Blood Donor Information Management System.

The NBSG, would become the first in Sub-Saharan Africa to use this technology for blood donor information management activity when the project becomes fully operational in June 2015.

Mrs Harriet Wereko-Brobby, the General Manager, Corporate Affairs of WAPCo, presenting the items, said WAPCo was pleased to partner the National Blood Service on the project, which was intended to improve data management for blood collection in Ghana.

She said the West African Gas Pipeline Company, whose mandate was to transport natural gas from Nigeria to customers in Benin, Togo and Ghana in a safe, responsible and reliable manner, was interested in providing support to organisations whose focus was on health and environment.

She pledged, on behalf of the company, to support other programmes of the National Blood Service in future.

Dr Justina Kordai Ansah, Director of the National Blood Service, Ghana, thanked WAPCo for the support and assured it that the computers and accessories would be used for the intended purpose.

She indicated that the software would help manage the entire blood value chain, consisting of information from registration centre of donors, through collection of blood, testing of donated units, processing into blood components through its storage and distribution to hospitals and the end user.

The software, when completed, would be piloted at the Southern Area Blood Centre, NBSG, and eventually rolled over to the other blood centres nationwide.

Dr Ansah called on other corporate institutions and stakeholders to emulate the example of WAPCo and support programmes and projects of the Blood Service to ensure the delivery of quality, safe and adequate supply of blood and blood products to patients who needed blood transfusion therapy.
