Bernard Antwi Boasiako – NPP Ashanti Regional Secretary

AN EMBARRASSING scene emerged during the opening of the vetting of NPP parliamentary aspirants at Asokwa, Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region on Tuesday.

The scenes were created by some people, clad in NPP paraphernalia, who stormed the venue of the vetting to hoot at Simon Osei Mensah, MP for Bosomtwe.

The MP, who was visiting the place to be vetted by a committee set up by the party, without any provocation, was hooted at by the charged crowd who had besieged the place.

Mr Osei Mensah, confirming the incident on Otec Fm later in the day, said, 'Yes a group of people hooted at me without any justification. It is shameful and it should be condemned.'

He accused one of his opponents in the race of engaging the people to jeer at him (Osei Mensah), describing the action of the people as a disgrace to the NPP as a political party.

According to him, he reported the behaviour of the crowd to the vetting committee, condemning the 'divisive behaviour' of the crowd.

The MP stated that he was not perturbed about the action of the people, disclosing that he had suffered similar harsh treatments in the past during party polls.

'In 2008 and 2012, my political opponents adopted this same strategy by engaging some people to hoot at me, but I did not utter a word and went ahead to win both polls.'

Mr Osei Mensah expressed confidence, 'I will win hands down; this is going to be my best primary ever.'

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional NPP peacefully vetted aspirants from twelve constituencies on the first day of the exercise.

The constituencies are Affigya Kwabre East, Asante Akyem North, Asante Akyem Central, Ahafo Ano South-East, Offinso North, Subin, Bosomtwe, Kwabre East and Bekwai.

The remaining constituencies where the various aspirants were vetted on the first day included Effiduase Asokore, Asawase and Ahafo-Ano North.
