'Sustain National Sanitation Day'
05.05.2015 LISTEN

Local Government and Rural Development Minister, Alhaji Collins Dauda, has charged the various assemblies in the Upper East Region to find innovative ways to sustain the excitement with which people across the region clean public places and their homes.

According to him, people would have to be encouraged to come out to clean their homes and public places, adding that 'as we join and encourage our people to clean the environments the first Saturday of every month, they will be adapting the monthly cleaning as a new habit and soon will become a normal practice across the country.'

The minister was speaking in an interview with some journalists after the seventh National Sanitation Day held in Bolgatanga and other districts in the Upper East Region over the weekend.

For the first time since the National Sanitation Day concept started, the youth took centre stage in the cleaning, giving the heads of department and other public institutions some time to rest as various teams went round cleaning the big gutters, streets and trading spaces.

Students from the Bolgatanga Midwifery and Nursing Training School were joined by the sector minister, the Upper East regional minister, parliamentarians and other government staffers to clean their surroundings.

The team of government officials joined market women to clean the Bolgatanga new and old markets squares before joining the members of the National Service Personnel Association and other youth groups to clean some major gutters in the regional capital.

Alhaji Dauda was impressed with the number of people who participated in the clean-up and the manner in which filths were cleared.

According to him, if all Ghanaians embrace the concept and make cleaning of the environment a regular routine, the country would be saving a lot of monies that central government and the various district and municipal assemblies are currently channelling in to the improvement of Sanitation across the country.

Popular music group, VVIP and other top musicians, including King Ayisoba entertained the groups as they cleaned.

Over 8000 waste bins were distributed to the various districts in the Bolgatanga Municipality.
