Road Safety Training Workshop To Be Held In Accra July

A two-day training workshop for commercial drivers in the Greater Accra region would be held in July in the capital to create awareness about some dangers on our roads.

The programme would be held on July 21-22, 2015 and will be for about 200 incensed commercial drivers from the various organized transport unions within the Accra metropolis.

This training workshop is under the auspices of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) in collaboration with Women in Logistics and Transport (WiLAT), Ghana, an international group consisting of female professional members of CILT.

Also involved in the organization of this workshop is the National Road Safety Commission (NRAC), THE Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the major organized transport unions in Ghana.

Chairperson of WiLAT Ghana, Dr. Doreen Owusu-Fianko has told this reporter that, “This training workshop is being organized as part of the corporate social responsibility of WiLAT and it is coming on at a time when the country continues to witness horrendous loss of precious lives on our roads”.

She added: “It is also to be seen as our modest contribution to the various coordinated interventions being made by the major players to make road transport very safe, or better still our contribution to the national vision for road safety which is, “Ghana, a country with the safest road transport system in Africa.”

The main objective of the project is to enhance the capacity of commercial drivers with refresher training programmes with the view to reducing road accidents.

It will also seek to equip participants with modern trends in the driving architecture as most drivers do not have access such transport training programmes.

The workshop will build a closer relationship between commercial drivers and key stakeholders in the road transport subsector and educate drivers on very important topics in the driving enterprise so as to improve the knowledge of most commercial drivers in Ghana.

Dr. Owusu-Fianko also stressed that it will also educate and sensitize participants and create awareness on healthy lifestyle, with the view to promoting healthy living.

Resource persons from the NRSC, DVLA, MTTU, Insurance and Health sectors among others, will facilitate the programme with participants being awarded certificates afterwards after which a similar programme would be held in other regions.
