The National Service Personnel Association (NASPA) of Ejisu-Juaben Municipal Assembly last Thursday organized an entrepreneurship seminar on the theme “Mindset Change in Entrepreneurship Perspective” for National Service personnel within the municipality.

This seminar was held at CSIR- Forestry Research Institute of Ghana (FORIG) conference hall at Fumesua-Ashanti and it was aimed at equipping the young graduates with valuable entrepreneurship skills.

The seminar saw a host of dignitaries, experienced coaches and resource personnel gracing the occasions.

Speaking at the seminar, Dr. Degraft Owusu-Manu, a senior lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah university of Science and Technology admonished student to create their own business rather than to rely on the government to give them non-existing jobs. In his presentation, he said "... graduates should think outside the box that is by doing things people have never done before."

"It's time graduate connect themselves to the world. It is rather unfortunate that personnel do not know any top official in their institution of service." Dr. Owusu-Manu added.

Dr. Owusu-Manu who happened to be the main speaker for the occasion stated emphatically that the best option personnel can have is being an entrepreneur since the government cannot employ all graduates.

"It is enjoyable to see your business growing and have the freedom to move about but if you are working for someone it’s becomes difficult to have time for yourself, to travel and explore the world."

He again blamed the low levels of entrepreneurial spirit in graduate on the educational system. He said "Our educational system is not bringing us to become entrepreneurs but we need to build our social capital to set us to a higher standard."

Also speaking at the programme, Mrs. Beatrice Boakye, a consultant at Binel consult and also a former regional manager of National Board for Small Scale Industry (NBSSI) said that everybody who so desired could be an entrepreneur if only he is determined and ready to sacrifice for the growth of his business.

She stated that "Entrepreneurship should naturally be an attraction for the youth especially graduates of tertiary institutions because in your education, you acquired a mentality for objectivity, consideration and evaluation of issues, hence better qualified to face problem and solution objectively."

Mrs Boakye again demonstrated the importance of technology to especially small scale business and organizations. She said that the youth especially graduates can introduce modern technologies into the small scale sector, hence new products and cost effectiveness thereby making them the market leaders.

She however lamented on some challenges such as lack of motivation, finance, competitive business environment and cumbersome procedure for securing the necessary permit to the development of young business.

Finally, Kwaku Osei Adu Agyeman, Naspa secretary thanked all personnel for honouring such a life changing seminar and entreated them to do same to other upcoming programmes.
