Affordable Housing Project For Security Agencies To Be Completed By 2016

The Minister for Water Resource Works and Housing, Dr. Kwaku Agyeman Mensah, has assured Ghanaians that by October 2016 the on-going construction of affordable housing units for security forces at kpone would be completed.

The project which is estimated to cost 101.29 million is being financed by the Government of Ghana.

He said the project formed part of Government's effort at addressing the acute housing shortfall currently facing the security service.

Dr. Kwaku Mensah made the disclosure at a day's visit to the Phase II of the on-going construction of housing units at kpone, Sakumono Sea Defence Project Phase II and Devtraco limited another on-going project.

According to the minister, over 339million dollars has being spent on the construction of the Sakumono sea Defence Phase I, and the ministry of water resource works and housing sought funds from the ministry of finance to embark on the project to enhance fisheries production.

‘We realised that the beach along the sakumono coastal stretch was eroding at an alarming rate due to strong waves. The extensive erosion along the beach resulted in immense narrowing of the strip of land between the shoreline and the Rail-line, and this posed great threat to the Accra-Tema Rail lines thus the Asaprochona to Tema section. Also the Nungua-Tema beach road was threatened."

The situation, according to contractors on the site, led to the implementation of the Sakumono Sea Defence Project (Phase I), which commenced in October, 2011 and ended December, 2012.

The works under the phase I of the project entailed the construction of an amour rock revetment, with gabion and geotextile filter system for stabilisation. The coastal stretch protected is about 200 metres. Messrs Amandi Holding limited executed the works.

In executing the works under phase one of the project, Messrs Amandi holdings limited developed a quarry for the production of the armour rock materials needed. The contractor undertook the construction works to specification and the quality of the works was very high.

The works under the first phase of the project were meant to give permanent protection to the beach road Accra-Tema Rail line thus the Asaprohona to Tema section.

It became very necessary to undertake additional works to the first phase of the project so as to attain the full benefits of the project.

This situation necessitated the implementation of the Sakumono Sea Defence Project (Phase II).

The scope of works of the second phase of the project entails the construction of an armour rock revetment, with gabion and geotextile filter system for stabilisation. Also, the landing site for fishing activities along that section of coast is being developed. The coastal stretch being protected is 3,500 metres.

The works under the second phase of the project would protect the Nungua-Tema beach road, the maritime university and stabilize the Sakumono Beach to facilitate fishing activities.

The cost of the works for the Sakumono Sea Defence project (Phase II) is Thirty Nine Million, Nine Hundred and Thirty Three Thousand, Three hundred and seventy five U.S dollars (US$39,933,375.00).
