Scholarships For Girls To Bridge National Gender Gap

A total of 15,700 girls from junior high schools have benefited from scholarships through the preparatory approach to student success in order to bridge the gender gap in access to education. Again, under the Gender Response Skills and Community Development Project (GRSCDP) the ministry granted scholarships to 668 girls from 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 academic years and presented equipment to government vocational institutions.

Honorable Nana Oye Lithur Minister of Gender Children and Social Protection made the announcement when she addressed the 3rd edition of the Federation of Zongo Ladies Educational Forum at the Nima Social Center in Accra.

The minister said under the Secondary Education Improvement Project approved by parliament on 3rd July 2014, 10,400 senior high school students of which 60% will be girls, will receive scholarships over a three year period. She explained that adolescent’ girls in senior high schools and students from low income families in Ghana will benefit from the scholarship package. This is to ensure that they are supported by the government of Ghana to remain in school and complete their secondary education successfully. She said

Nana Oye Lithur said in order to ensure women continue to be empowered, the government will continue to create enabling environment by honoring its national commitment towards women.

She said “we at the Ministry of Gender Children and Social Protection being the national machinery for women has also finalized the drafting of the affirmative Action Bill and forwarded it to the Attorney General for consideration”.

The ministry she said, has also co sponsored the Intestate Succession and Property Rights of Spouses’ Bill and Ministry Of Justice and Attorney General adding that a national Gender Policy has also been developed to address gender equality, equity and empowerment of women for national development.
