Seaweld team marks World Day for Safety and Health

Takoradi, May 2, GNA- Mr Alfred Fafali Adagbedu, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Seaweld Engineering has noted the need for operators in the upstream industry to ensure maximum safety as a prerequisite for winning contract industry.

He expressed the need for investment in occupational health and safety as well as making it a daily culture to do way with accidents particularly in the extractive sector.

The CEO of the oil service company made the observation in an interaction to reporters after almost 15- kilometre walk by members of his company to commemorate World Occupational Health and Safety Day.

The global theme for the celebration 'I'd "Join In Building a Culture on Prevention on Occupational Health and Safety."

To mark the global celebration, staff of Seaweld wielded placards some of which read: "safety is not a hobby, is a living ", "safety is a way of life ", and "safer you, a safer me 'to drum home the theme.

Mr Adagbedu said for more than seven years, the company continues to make safety a number one priority, which has contributed to its achievement.

The Seaweld Engineering Company has not recorded any lost time to injury since the inception of the indigenous oil services provider.

The CEO said accidents are avoidable with strong safety culture adding: 'Health and safety is not a choice but a responsibility.'

He said it is important for stakeholders in securing a safe and healthy working environment through a system of defined rights, responsibility and duties.

Mr Alexander Hammond, Head of Occupational Health and Safety noted that 88 per cent of work place accidents are avoidable.

Mr Alfred Ekow Gyan, Deputy Western Regional Minister called on companies to follow correct safety procedures, regulations and instructions.

He mentioned that human resource continue to be the country's greatest asset and must therefore be protected.

The Deputy Minister said good standard of health and safety must be observed to make the work place a safer one.
