Upper East chiefs welcome NSD

Bawku (U/E), April 30, GNA - Naba Abugrago Azorka II, Bawku Naba and other paramount chiefs in the Upper East Region have welcome the National Sanitation Day (NSD) exercise and any other programmes that would develop the area.

This was made known when Alhaji Collins Dauda, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, paid courtesy calls to the chiefs.

Naba Azorka said the region and for that matter Ghana is peaceful and appealed to the minister to be up and doing to bring development to the area.

He said sanitation is one of the key issues that must be given priority and encourage in all communities to promote good health.

Naba Azorka noted that chiefs are agents of development and with the efforts and support from chiefs in Bawku and its environs the NSD exercise would be successful in the area on Saturday, May 2.

He expressed gratitude to the minister and his entourage for recognising chiefs as the soul agents of propagating the agenda of the NSD exercise in their various localities.

The Regent of Bolgatanga, Raymond Alafia Abilba said the people are committed to promote good sanitary practices to avoid the outbreak of diseases in the municipality.

He said most of the waste generated locally is from the markets, hence the need to educate the market chiefs and queens to take the NSD campaign to a higher level to achieve the ministry's target.

Alhaji Dauda reiterated government's commitment to create jobs and to offer the enabling environment to promote investment.

He appealed to the chiefs to encourage people to promote development in their localities and propagate the message of good sanitary practices.

Alhaji Dauda, who is also the Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, noted that sensitisation and education is important in everyday life and activities and this must be encouraged in all parts of the country to instill the spirit of good sanitation practices in Ghanaians.

He called on the Ghanaians, especially traditional authorities and opinion leaders to effectively support the NSD campaign for it to achieve its goal and sustainability.

Mr Bukari Issaku, Bawku Municipal Chief Executive said the assembly is faced with challenges and that notwithstanding, progress has been made.

"We still need government support to compliment the efforts we are making,' he said.

The Upper East Regional Minister, Mr James Tiigah Zugah commended the chiefs and people for the support they are offering the NSD exercise and appealed to them to maintain the spirit.
