Following the confirmation of the outbreak of the Avian bird flu in neighbouring Burkina Faso, the Ministry of Agriculture has announced a ban on poultry importation from that country.

An outbreak of the disease was confirmed in Nigeria recently.

As a result of this, intensified surveillance by Veterinary Services Department of the Ministry of Agriculture has started in the Upper East, Upper West and Volta Region.

These are aimed at preventing a possible spread of the disease to the country through the borders.

About 200,000 hens and 2,000 Guinea fowls in Burkina Faso were reported to have been killed by the disease by April 13, 2015.

It is in this regard that Ghanaian poultry farmers have appealed to government to do more to help protect them against the outbreak of the avian bird flu.

'We do not intend to create panic in the country but wish to remind the general public of the total ban of importation of poultry and poultry products from Burkina Faso,' a statement from the Agriculture Ministry noted, adding that a standstill order and other necessary measures since April 1, this year has been in force in Burkina Faso.
