Re: I Can’t Fight Corruption Alone—John Mahama

Feature Article Re: I Cant Fight Corruption Alone—John Mahama

I was delighted to lay hands on an article posted on GhanaWeb by Papa Appiah (Gyesi-Appiah, Alexander)- a blogger on www.ghanasemsem.blogspot.com on the above topic. After reading the well authored piece one could categorize the issues under three headings. Papa Appiah attempted to compare three presidents-former president Kufour, late president Mill and incumbent president Mahama. Appiah also attempted to bring Hon. Nana Addo in, which exposed the kind of mischief that Appiah wanted to play. The third attempt by Appiah was to run a PR gimmick probably for Hon. Paa Kwesi Ndum.

It is a fact that the constitution of Ghana sanctions free speech and media freedom. For this reason opinion flies uninterrupted in the Ghanaian media. However, in both transitional and developed democracies free speech must go with responsibility. In as much as I respect Papa Appiah’s right to speech and also support to a large extent most of the issues raised in the said article, I shatter to disagree with certain portions of the article.

Paragraph 3 of the article sought to put out totally misleading and inaccurate information, all in a bid to cause mischief. –“through a feeling of entitlement as is the case of Akuffo Addo….” is never a statement that should be attributed to Nana Addo. In the first place, the seat of government is not connected with any skin or stool. Therefore, it is palpable wrong for one to claim entitlement to the presidency.

Even kingship which is limited to membership to a royal family has a procedure. Importantly, Nana Addo has never stated and would not make such statement. I challenge Papa Appiah to publicly present any evident to prove that Nana Addo is seeking to become president through a feeling of entitlement.

It is not wrong to promote your favorite in the media and I encourage Appiah to continue his bid to do PR work for Hon. Ndoum. There is no doubt that Paa Kwesi Ndoum is innovative and hard working. It is also true that he has created a lot of opportunities for young people and that remains to her credit.

As for the ineptitude and the corruption scandals in the Mahama-led administration, it is better not to talk about them. Every Ghanaian can see them.

Zuberu Aliu.
