Accra, April 27, GNA - Samsung Electronics Africa has launched the Samsung Digital Village: an assembly of solar-powered health and education facilities at Volo in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region.
The digital village includes a solar-powered internet school built to accommodate up to 24 learners and a solar-powered tele-medical centre that could provide professional medical assistance remotely.
The village also includes a solar power generator that powers up an administration centre with office space that could be used by local entrepreneurs and nearby schools or community centre personnel with limited electricity supply.
The facility is expected to bridge the digital divide by providing the community with access to information and communication technology and also serve as a catalyst for local business development and government service delivery.
Mr Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa, Deputy Minister of Education who graced the launch, expressed his gratitude to the company for its support to the community.
The project which has been ongoing in some African countries, forms part of Samsung's Citizenship Programme, aimed at improving healthcare delivery and education in countries which they operate in.
"In addition to providing the appropriate technologies, we are also working to ensure that the Volo community takes ownership of the digital village and receive adequate training to optimise use of the facilities,' a statement from Samsung said.
According to the 'Education for all' report released recently by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, there are 58 million children out of school globally and about 100 million children do not complete primary education, while healthcare in remote areas is lacking and non-existent due to shortage of facilities and urban-rural gap.
'Samsung believes that technology is a powerful tool to change these circumstances, improve people's lives and create a better society,' the statement said.
