Asaman gets new police station

Asaman (Ash), April 25, GNA - A new police station has been opened at Asaman, near Agona in the Sekyere District of Ashanti amidst fanfare.

The station, a renovated community post office, was co -funded by the Sekyere District Assembly, the community and natives living abroad and has a charge office, offices for the station commander, the Criminal investigations department (CID), and a male and female cells and washrooms.

The cost of the project was not made known.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Nathan Kofi Boakye, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, who performed the opening ceremony, said he was happy that security in the area has been taken to another level.

It is also a reinforcement of efforts under his administration to deal with violent crimes by establishing a strong police presence in all parts of the Region, being done through upgrading old dilapidated police stations as well as constructing new ones.

He said police stations have been built at Anyinasu, Asokore-Mampong, Domeabra, Mampong, Kotei, Ahenkro, Trede, Atasomanso, among other areas, whereas those at Atwima-Techiman, Kenyase, Tech and others were upgraded to district police stations.

DCOP Kofi Boakye reiterated his commitment to combat or reduce all manner of crimes, especially robbery to the barest minimum and called on community members to cooperate with the police to achieve this, adding that, 'policing is a shared responsibility'.

He called on District commanders and other senior officers on duty to be more vigilant and up to the task in the wake of the recent spate of cell breaks in the Region, since senior officers on duty would also be held liable in the event of cell breaks.

He stated that in most cases senior officers and their men on duty are to blame for their negligence and collusion with crime suspects, which aids them to escape from police custody.

DCOP Kofi Boakye vowed to deal with hooligans who were always bent on fomenting trouble in the communities and called on community elders and opinion leaders not to condone their acts by going to plead for them when they are arrested by the police.

Mr Edward Kusi Ayarkwa, the District Chief Executive, praised the Town's citizens living abroad for helping to provide a post office, which had been upgraded into a police station.

He said, the station, which was made possible with the help of the chiefs and the Assembly, still needed to be supported with other logistics, such as motorbikes and a vehicle to make their work effective.

Nana Adarkwa Yiadom, the chief of Konya, a suburb at Agona, pledged the community's support for the police and appealed to parents and guardians to advise their wards not to do things outside the law as no chief or an opinion leader would protect them.
