The Head of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission to Togo and former interim President of Liberia, Dr Amos Sawyer has challenged Togolese and all political parties to owe it as a duty to ensure that Saturday’s 4th presidential elections are peaceful, credible, free, transparent and fair elections to elect leaders of their choice through consensus building.

He asked the people of Togo see the upcoming elections as efforts to deepen and consolidate democracy not only in Togo but also in the sub-region and Africa as a whole. Adding that they should be mindful that peaceful elections rest on the people of Togo themselves.

President Amos sawyer further stated the outcome can impact positively on the socio economic and political stability and security of the region and also should be used as a yard stick to measure the credibility of the election with a deep sense of pride.

Former President Sawyer said this when he addressed members of the ECOWAS election monitoring team in Lome ahead of Saturdays elections and was confident of a successful exercise Saturday. Adding the task t as elections observers is very essential and enhances legitimacy the elections and builds trust

Mr Amos Sawyer said it was the hope of ECOWAS that all Togolese would act very responsibly throughout the election process so that at the end of the day we would all have a free, fair and peaceful election for the good of the people and the nation.

He reaffirmed the total neutrality of the ECOWAS Mission, which is made up of long-term observers, who have been in Togo and the short-term observers being deployed across the country’s geopolitical zones ahead of the general elections.

He said earlier on President John Dramani Mahama Chairman of ECOWAS has been to Togo, Lome, Togo, to continue his consultation with key political stakeholders ahead of the country’s elections wished them well and also to see the level of preparations and the satisfaction of the various political parties contesting the polls, so that the election would go on peacefully.
