Innocent Twins Rescued From Wicked Mother At Dodowa
20.04.2015 LISTEN

Five-month-old twins who were abandoned by their 19-year-old mother in a stream at Dodowa in the Greater Accra Region, have been rescued by a good Samaritan.

The mother, Bernice Adongo, a Junior High School (JHS) dropout, was arrested after the good Samaritan spotted her dumping her two girls.

The babies, who were wrapped in a piece of cloth, screamed while their mother walked away.

The babies, named Freda and Felicia, were immediately taken to a hospital where they were treated and discharged and are now being cared for by the police until a decision is made on their fate.

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Dodowa District Police, Chief Superintendent of Police, Mr Kwesi Ofori, said about noon on April 16, 2015, a woman (name withheld) told the police she was in the bush chopping sticks for firewood, when she saw Bernice walking by the stream.

The complainant told the police she became suspicious when she saw Bernice carrying a heavy load and nervously looking over her shoulders.

The curious woman hid in the bush and observed Bernice as she dumped the heavy load wrapped with a piece of cloth in the stream.

'When the cries of babies emerged from the load, the woman thought the cold water was making them cry,' he said.

The complainant is said to have rescued the babies after their mother walked hurriedly from the scene, oblivious of the fact that her babies had been saved.

The complainant immediately raised an alarm, leading to the arrest of the mother.

Later at the Dodowa Police Station, Bernice told police investigators that she decided to abandon her babies because of frustration.

'She said she used to work in a local eatery, popularly known as 'chop bar' but was impregnated by a man identified as Darlington, alias Redoo. Darington, however, did not accept responsibility,' the police said.

Bernice said she had been living with her mother and stepfather at Mensah Bar, near Dodowa, but recently they told her they were tired of caring for her and the twins.

At the Dodowa Police Station, the babies were the centre of attraction as police personnel and visitors carried and played with them. The babies giggled and laughed loudly as they enjoyed their new environment.

The Dodowa District Police Commander who witnessed one of the scenes said, 'It is heartbreaking to see how a human being, especially, a mother, could leave her biological children in a stream. These kids are obviously fighters'.
