The First Lady Lordina Mahama says there is the need to inspire the youth to achieve their immense creative potential and help the industry to understand the role of skilled labour in the growth of the economy.
In that regard, she said vocational and technical institutions should be encouraged to equip young people with the requisite skills to enable them enter the world of work and also make something meaningful for themselves.
The First Lady was speaking at a ceremony to present equipment and food items to the Pentecost Vocational Training Centre at Gbawe in Accra.
The items include hand sewing machines, hair dryers, industrial over-lock machines, Lap tops among others. The donation forms part of the Lordina Foundation aim at helping the less privilege in the area of entrepreneurial skills.
The First Lady said vocational and technical education must aim at being the best alternative to traditional universities.
'This spells the reason why govt is in the process of turning polytechnics into technical universities to help restore faith into technical and vocational qualification,' she said.
She asked the students to adapt modern trends as industries are undergoing continuous changes in technology.
The Principal of the Institute Mrs Rosaline Quarcopome commended the First Lady for the gesture. She called on the First Lady to provide the school with a bus which will convey students to and from the school. She also asked the First Lady to help complete the roofing of the hostel for the institute.
The Aspiring MP for the area Obuobia Darko Poku provided hundred bags of cement and five streetlights to support the institute.
The Municipal Chief Executive of Ga South Jerry Akwei Thompson said though the institute belongs to the Church of Pentecost, government will continue to partner the church to ensure that the institute help train more of the less privileged.
Meanwhile, in a speech read on his behalf, the Chairman of the Pentecost Church, Apostle Doctor Opoku Onyinah called for more attention to the plight of Vocational and Technical Institutes.
He said these institutes should not be treated as second class but must be accorded the necessary attention especially in terms of funding and the provision of equipment.
