Update: Four Ghanaians confirmed dead in South Africa

The Ghana Embassy in South Africa has confirmed the death of four Ghanaians in the rainbow nation, which has been rocked with violence in the past week.

A man, two women and a baby were discovered dead in a salon in Heibron in Free State, South Africa.

The embassy is yet to establish the cause of the deaths of the individuals, however embassy reps have revealed that initial police reports state the salon in which the bodies were discovered had been locked up.

According to the Embassy, the bodies have since been removed for post mortem examinations to be conducted.

Earlier sources indicated that the four had gone missing for three days and that concerned individuals went in search of them. The reports suggested that the four may have been killed by armed youth protesting the takeover of local jobs by immigrants.

In related news, South African President Jacob Zuma has sworn to put an end to the attacks.

Mr Zuma, on a visit to a refugee camp in the port of Durban, made this promise to foreigners displaced in the xenophobic attacks.

He told the immigrants that the ongoing violence goes against South African values and he would bring it all to an end.

Mr Zuma's words were met with jeering from some in the crowd who accused him of acting too slowly.

South Africa has been hit with a recent wave of xenophobic attacks, following alleged statement from Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini calling for foreigners to "go back to their countries". However, he says his comments were distorted.

Official data suggests there are about two million foreign nationals in South Africa, about 4% of the total population. But some estimates put the number of immigrants at five million.
