Global Communities donates to Ghana Health Service

Accra, April 18, GNA - Global Communities, an NGO on behalf of United States Agency for International Development (USAID) at the weekend donated items meant to address the poor sanitation problems in the country to Ghana Health Service in Accra.

The items which consisted of 16,000 strips of Aquatabs is to disinfect contaminated water bodies with lack of potable to make it safe for drinking.

Mr Ebenezer Kye-Mensah, Senior Capacity Building Specialist of Global Communities said the drug made of chlorine has been proven to purify water.

He said there is an ongoing project named Water, Access Sanitation and Hygiene for Urban Poor Project (WASHUP) which educates people on how to tidy up and keep their environments clean to kick cholera out.

'So this donation to Ghana Health Service is designed to support ongoing efforts in the fight against cholera,' he said.

He said USAID is helping to eradicate cholera across Africa and by so doing they are working towards helping people to improve on their hygiene behaviour.

In Ghana he said, mechanised boreholes which serves about 5,000 people have been put up at Nima in Accra, to provide water to the community and other localities like New Town.

He said 4,000 toilet facilities have also been provided for individuals to prevent them from defecating in public places.

'This brings about improved hygiene and sanitation behaviours,' he explained.

Dr Ebenezer Appiah-Denkiyira, Director General of GHS, who received the donation expressed gratitude to the donors.

He advised the public to keep their surroundings clean especially those who deal with the edible foods.
