Officials of the South African High Commission have stepped up security around the Embassy to stop any potential reprisals, following the xenophobic attacks on some African migrants including some Ghanaians in that country by unemployed South Africans, who blame their jobless situation on them.

JoyNews' Efua Acquah Harrison reports that a police armoured vehicle, fire service truck and police pickup truck monitoring activities in the street. Just before she left the location, she says, a SWAT vehicle also showed up.

Residents of Labone; where the Embassy is located, who spoke to Efua, felt that there was no need for the added security.

Most felt that it was unnecessary for South Africans here in Ghana to fear reprisal as "we Ghanaians are peace-loving people".

There was no need, they said for any Ghanaians to attack South Africans in retaliation.

In related news, the South African High Commissioner to Ghana, Lulama Xingwana has denied allegations that a Ghanaian has been killed in the fighting there .

According to her, Emmanuel Quarcoo, who was reported murdered in the attacks, collapsed and died due to natural causes.
