Alliance Against Xenophobia

By NUGS Ghana
Alliance Against Xenophobia
18.04.2015 LISTEN

In a determined response to the slaughter of African immigrants in South Africa, the Leadership of National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has convened the Alliance Against Xenophobia (AAX), a network of progressive mass organisations in Accra.

The AAX condemns in strong terms the barbarity and obscene cruelty in the streets of South Africa and deeply regrets the official complicity and reckless disregard for the lives of African Immigrants by the Government of President Jacob Zuma.

The loud silence of the international community in the face of this mass butchery in the streets of South Africa is a blot on the conscience of humanity.

The AAX is deeply concerned that what is happening in South Africa under the watch of President Jacob Zuma is nothing new. The fact that not a single person has been arrested and prosecuted with regards to similar occurrences in 2008 is a grave scandal.

The statement by ECOWAS chairman President John Dramani Mahama, in reaction to the situation though welcoming, was weak and lacked clarity, thus it failed to send a strong message to the President and government of South Africa whose security forces have folded their arms in the face of the heinous mass slaughter of African Citizens.

In view of the above, the AAX calls on the Government of Ghana and ECOWAS to urgently order a critical review of its diplomatic relations with South Africa. The Ambassador of South Africa in Ghana must be summoned before the Presidency.

AAX holds strongly that such a response will send a strong signal to the South African Leadership and force it take immediate action to address the situation.

It must be clearly understood that the youth of this country will not take kindly to the events in South Africa. It is the express wish of the AAX that growing anger in the streets of Accra, Kumasi, Lagos and Lome will not deteriorate in a manner that will prove harmful to South African Business interest in Ghana and ECOWAS.

We call on all Ghanaians to remain calm in the face of these obscene provocations and express our deep sympathies to families of the victims of this untold tragedy

The continued existence of the apartheid economic system, 20 years after the collapse of political apartheid is the root cause of the social collapse, crime, mass destitution and the extremes of inequality in South Africa. Thus the AXX calls on the government of Jacob Zuma to fulfil his promise to the people of South Africa to implement radical land reform, address inequality and socio-economic injustice by pursuing a progressive and inclusive economic reform.

African immigrants should not be used as convenient scape goats of the neo- apartheid economic order which concentrates vast wealth in few white business, mining and land owning oligarchs as millions of South Africans leave in absolute squalor.
