NDC vows to sanction and disown lawless supporters in Ashanti region

The leadership of the National Democratic Congress in the Ashanti Region has warned it will not shield party supporters who engage in acts of lawlessness.

The warning comes in the wake of agitation by youth of the party calling for the removal of some District and Municipal Chief Executives.

In the latest incident, NDC youth in the Nwabiagya North Constituency last week threatened to violently remove DCE for Atwima Nwabiagya, Nana Asare Bediako, if the President fails to sack him within one week.

Similar actions have taken place in the Amansie West and Afigya Kwabre Districts as well as Ejisu-Juaben Municipality with more expected to hit the party.

The NDC regional executive say the party has no room for members who flout its rules and the national constitution.

The party officials have been meeting to consider various options, including expulsion of people whose conduct poses threats to the conducive environment there.

At a meeting held last Wednesday, the party vowed to deal ruthlessly with any supporter found to have disturbed the public peace or brought the party's name into disrepute.

Regional Secretary, Raymond Tandoh, told Nhyira FM “it is a worrying situation”, describing the emergence of the youth agitations as Arab Spring.

“It has started like the Arab spring. First it was at Manso Nkwanta, Afigya Kwabre, Ejisu-Juaben and now Nwabiagya North. So as a regional executive, we met last Wednesday and we decided to stop it”. Mr. Tandoh explained.

The executive committee resolved to disown and punish members who flout the party's constitution and that of the state.

Sections of the NDC constitution prescribes punitive measures which include suspension or worse expulsion as some of the punitive measures against erring members.

Mr. Tandoh warned the party will not shield anyone found to have violated the rules.

“Article 39 and 40 of our [NDC] constitution spell out clearly that we should not bring the party's image into disrepute. You cannot take the law into your hands. We will not shield anybody who misbehaves,” Raymond Tandoh warned.

The youth wing from 89 branches in the Nwabiagya North constituency gave a 7-day ultimatum to President Mahama to sack DCE for the area, Nana Asare Bediako or they will violently remove him.

But the party has condemned the action of the youth.

“You cannot give the President ultimatum. It is unacceptable”. Mr. Raymond Tandoh said.

Meanwhile, executives at the Nwabiagya South Constituency have condemned the youth for their outburst, ahead of a scheduled meeting to resolve the matter.

Nwabiagya South Constituency Chairman, James Adu Tutu said the “ the conduct of the youth is alien to the party”.
