Didier Reynders welcomes 'historic' election in Nigeria
02.04.2015 LISTEN

BRUSSELS, Kingdom of Belgium, April 2, 2015/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders congratulates, just like EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, Muhammadu Buhari on his election as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The fifth presidential election since the end of military rule in 1999 marks a historic step forward by demonstrating the maturity of the Nigerian democracy.

The people of Nigeria have been able to choose a successor for the incumbent president Goodluck Jonathan in accordance with the principles laid down in the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance. The political parties, candidates, civil society organizations and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have all contributed to a successful and inclusive election process. President Jonathan's engagement to organize free and fair elections in Nigeria and his acceptance of the results undoubtedly merit the extended hand of fellowship of his successor Buhari. Nigerians of all stripes can now look forward to focusing on the many challenges and opportunities that lie ahead of the country.

Belgium remains committed to strengthening its ties with Nigeria.
