World Theatre Day marked at New Horizon Special School

Accra, March 27, GNA - The National Theatre of Ghana on Friday, marked the World Theatre Day (WTD) at New Horizon Special School in Accra, with theatre activities aimed at bring such activities to the door step of children with special needs.

The Theatre's Dance Group put up some spectacular dance performance to showcase Ghana's rich cultural heritage to the children.

Mrs Dzifa Gomashie, Deputy Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts said that the National Theatre plays a critical role in national development, promotion of peace and solidarity, instilling values and forging unity in the country.

'So as stadia are critical to the development of sports, so are theatres to the development of the arts, culture and tourism.

'This year's message of using theatre to address social issues and to affirm that the best comes from unexpected sources is reflected through the performance here at the New Horizon School' she added.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, the Principal of the New Horizon Special School, Madam Vanessa Adu-Akorsah, expressed gratitude to the National Theatre for choosing the school as the venue to mark the event.

'Indeed they did prove to us that they are an inclusive community organization, they think about everybody in the society,' she said.

Madam Adu-Akorsah thanked the National Theatre for giving one of the school's former female pupils the opportunity to excel by being part of the Theatres' team.

'We are happy today, we are grateful for the opportunity, and for the exposure it has brought us also to be part of this event,' she added.

The pupils on the other hand expressed joy and joined in the performance of the dance group.

The WTD was created by the International Theatre in 1961 and is celebrated annually on March 27.

Nations and theaters all over the world organize various events to mark the day, and every year a world figure shares his or her reflections on the arts.

This year's message was delivered by Polish Theatre Director, Krzysztof Warlikowski.
