AngloGold Ashanti Trains 24 Obuasi Women in Decoration Making

Accra, 31st March, 2015- Twenty-four women from the Obuasi community have benefited from a two week training in decoration making to enhance their economic lives.

The training was organized and sponsored by AGA Obuasi at the cost of GHC19, 000. It was facilitated by the National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI) in conjunction with the Vynaam Decoration and Culinary Services.

The beneficiaries were selected from six farming communities in the Obuasi Municipality namely Sansu, Binsere, Abompekrom, Anyinam, Odumasi and Nhyiaso.

At the graduation ceremony at the AGA Wawase Club House in Obuasi, they were each presented with starter packs and certificates of participation.

In his address, Mr. Kelepile Dintwe – Vice President for Sustainability, commended the women for their participation in the training and urged them to use what they learnt to promote their own businesses so as to enhance their economic independence.

He said AGA, driven by its values to ensure that people in the communities where it operates are better off for its presence, is happy to have initiated the training programme, stating, “it is our hope that the women will use the skills they have acquired to improve their livelihoods”.

Mr. Dintwe commended the NBBSI and their partners for making the training a success and helping AGA to achieve its objective.

“The decorations are very beautiful and there will be no need to look for such services outside Obuasi,” he noted

The Municipal Chief Executive of Obuasi, Hon Ofori Agyeman Boadi expressed delight that the women have gone through the training successfully and appealed to the company to extend the training to men in the communities. He said opportunities abound in plumbing, electrical, mechanical etc. in the municipality therefore training such trainings will improve employment opportunities in the municipality.

Nana Ampofo-Bekoe – Manager Sustainability, urged them to impart their newly acquired experience and skills to other members in their communities to improve the general social and economic livelihood in the municipality.

Madam Araba Gyasiwaa of Anyinam community on behalf of the beneficiaries thanked AGA for the wonderful gesture and appealed to the communities to support AGA even as the company goes through challenging times. .
