Fufuo,  a community in the Atwima Nwabiagya District of the Ashanti Region, has been thrown into a state of mourning following a tragic incident during a communal labour exercise.

A dilapidated school building wall collapsed on a member of the local unit committee, who was part of a team demolishing the old school block.

Forty- two year old Owusu Bempah was pronounced dead on arrival at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) after being referred from the Barekese Health Center, about ten kilometers from Fufuo.

Chairman of the Unit Committee, Samuel Nsiah, who also sustained injuries on the limbs, is responding to treatment at the same hospital.

The Unit Committee organized the communal labour to pull down the old primary school block to make room for the construction of a new market.

But Mr Owusu, a father of five and treasurer of the unit committee, could not survive when the walls of the school building collapsed on him.

He died whilst being pulled out of an ambulance at the KATH's Accident and Emergency Center, hospital authorities say.

An eyewitness, Nana Ntiamoah told Nhyira FM a third person, also a member of the Unit Committee escaped from the rubbles as he jumped to safety.

Apparently, other members of the demolition exercise had shouted in an attempt to warn them when the walls started falling, but they could save Mr Owusu.

Mr. Owusu's five-month old pregnant wife, Diana Owusu is shocked at the demise of her husband.
