A new political party has emerged in Ghana with the sole aim of wrestling power in 2016.

The new party, United Progressive Party or UPP, was on Tuesday certified provisionally by the Electoral Commission to start preparations towards the 2016 general elections.

Founder of the party, Akwasi Addai popularly known as Odike is however not new to mainstream politics in the country.

In the 2012 election he secured the least votes totaling 8, 877 representing 0.08 percent when he led the United Front Party in the presidential election.

The Kumasi based businessman told Joy News' Elton Brobbey that resolving the energy crisis permanently remains his primary goal when elected in 2016.

He intends bringing in more independent power producers and possibly sell out the current power distributor Electricity Company of Ghana.

He said he would roll out programmes to change the economy of the nation using the “natural mineral resources and arable land for agriculture”.
