WANEP lauds National Peace Council

Accra, March 31, GNA - The West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) has lauded the National Peace Council for initiating moves to curb the seeming religious intolerance in some schools.

Mr Chukwuemeka B. Eze, the Executive Director of WANEP, said the Council was living up to its mandate of facilitating and developing mechanism to prevent, manage, resolve and build sustainable peace in the country.

He said of concern to all and sundry was the current spate of ethnocentric politics gradually creeping into the polity as well as the seeming religious intolerance in schools, which must be arrested before its degenerates.

Mr Eze made the commendation in Accra in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Monday on the sideline of a national stakeholders' forum on religious tolerance and freedom in Ghana, organised by the Council in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme.

He said there was no better way to address religious intolerance than for stakeholders to sit down and talk.

The Executive Director said religious intolerance was a very dangerous phenomenon which must be tackled very seriously.

He said Ghana must take a cue from other nations in the sub-region that have been bedeviled with religious intolerance and violence; stating that 'Ghana cannot afford to go in that direction'.

He urged the participants to be very open minded in their discussions, knowing very well that the outcome of their deliberations can inform other nations in the sub-region.
