The former Acting Chief of Chinto near Nsawam in the Eastern Region Nana Okotoako Kofi Mankata II, 54, and his driver Nana Kwame, 38, were both gunned down Saturday night at Nsawam-Adoagyiri by unknown assailants after returning from a funeral.

The masked motorbike-riding assailants, according to sources shot the Chief and his driver right in front of his (Chief's) house and bolted away.

The bodies have been deposited at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra for autopsy.

Nsawam Police Commander Chief Superintendent Akwasi Kankam Boadu who confirmed the incident to  Starr News'  regional correspondent Kojo Ansah said the police received reports of the incident around 9:30 pm on Saturday and immediately dispatched Officers to the scene.

He said the bodies were lying dead in a puddle of blood when the Officers got to the scene.

He said no arrest has been made yet but investigations are ongoing.

Some residents in the area have linked the murder to a protracted chieftaincy dispute in the Chinto community.

Nana Mankata was destooled by a judicial committee of the traditional council headed by Aburihene Otoobour Djan Kwasi II in 2010 on grounds of disrespect and violent harassment of his own subjects.
