Islamabad, March 18, (dpa/GNA) - Pakistani jets killed 34 suspected Islamist militants in airstrikes Wednesday, the military said, days after Taliban suicide bombers targeted Christian churches.

The aircraft bombed suspected hideouts of Pakistani Taliban in the Tirah Valley area of Khyber tribal district near the Afghan border, a military statement said.

The valley is also home to another group of rebels called Lashkar-e-Islam.

The latest airstrikes occurred days after a pair of suicide bombers blew themselves up outside churches in eastern Lahore city, killing 17 people in the latest of a string of attacks against religious minorities.

Taliban splinter group Jamaat ul Ahrar took responsibility for the bombing and vowed to continue targeting Christians.

The military has stepped up an offensive against Islamist militants in border tribal regions after Taliban gunmen killed 136 children at an army-run school in December.
