Veep Endorses First Millennium Marathon Event Led By Five-Time World Champion Haile Gebrselassie

Ghana's Vice President KwesiAmissah Arthur has commended Double Olympic gold medalist and five-time world champion over 10,000m, Haile Gebrselassie, for his global achievements in the area of sports that has lifted high Africa in sports.

Vice president kwesiAmissahArthur made the statement when The Double Olympic gold medalist and five-time world champion over 10,000m, Haile Gebrselassie, who is in Ghana to partake in the launch of the first millennium marathon event called on him on Wednesday 11th march 2015 at the Flagstaff House.

Mr.Amissah Arthur said he fullyendorsed the initiative very much and it was welcome ,since he and President Mahama would join .adding that he would personally run and not just start,but vas very happy that , Haile Gebrselassie has promised that the event has come to stay and that it would be an annual event ,so called on the Youth and Sport Ministry to take acue from the event.

He said since he came to office two years ago he has launched two sporting projects, sourged them to do their best so that when they start an initiative it doesn't die ,so that it get to its logical conclusion.

On his part, Haile Gebrselassie thanked the Vice President for the kind gesture by receiving him and that he was also in Ghana to rekindle Ghana's longstanding relationship with his home country Ethiopia and to partake in the launch of the first millennium marathon event be held in Ghana.

He said he was pleased to be in Ghana because the millennium marathon is really important and useful. And the reasons are that, it also builds the relationship between Ghana and Ethiopia. And this is also important for the world. It is not just a marathon for one day. People really prepare for this" the superstar athlete noted.

The Ethiopian superstar, lauded The Millennium Marathon Sports Company alongside major stakeholders in the country; the Government of Ghana, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Tourism Ministry, Accra Metropolitan Assembly, for coming up with such an idea together with the organizers .

He saidcurrently Ghana is the beacon of democracy in Africa and also lauded Ghana for its democratic credentials, peace unity and stability on the African soil, adding that the event has come to stay he promised Vice President Amissah Arthur that he would make sure that it becomes an annual event

This will be the first time Ghana will be hosting the event for both local and international runners. Organizers of the event, Millennium Marathon Sports Company believe the race and its side attractions will boost Ghana's economy in terms of trade and tourism.

As thousands of marathon runners are expected to participate in this maiden edition across the capital, the event is expected to involve a mix of ambassadors and ministers to promote health, tourism and trade and is billed to attract over 15,000 runners, both locally and internationally.

The 21k km and 5k km marathon will commence from the Independence Square through principal streets in the capital city and end at the same Independence Square.
