Minister urges communities to rekindle self-help spirit
05.03.2015 LISTEN

Lambussie, U/WR, March 5, GNA - Alhaji Amidu Sulemana, the Upper West Regional Minister has appealed to people in the communities to rekindle the self help spirit to complement government's development efforts.

He noted that unlike the past, where community members took upon themselves to initiate development projects and provided maintenance of the water facilities, they had now abandoned the concept and depended on government for everything of basic necessity.

The practices had led to the breakdown and mismanagement of boreholes, and small town water systems and are waiting for government to rehabilitate the rundown projects.

The Regional Minister, who is on a tour of government projects in the Lambussie-Karni and Sissala West Districts blamed politicians for the change of attitude in the communities, saying: 'politicians promise many things which they are unable to provide, hence the lackadaisical attitude of the people towards the concept.

Alhaji Sulemana called on opinion leaders in the communities to rekindle the concept to undertake more development projects on their own to help improve their living conditions and not to rely on government alone for everything.
