Accra, March 05, GNA - MTN Ghana Foundation, in partnership with Joy FM, has successfully ended the second season of the reading competition with Kanda Community Reading Club emerging winners.

Ablekuma Reading Club came second, with Burma Camp and Osu Community Reading Clubs, taking the third and fourth places respectively.

For their prizes, Kanda and Ablekuma received GH₵500 and GH₵300 respectively. In addition to the cash prizes, the winners would also enjoy a weekend stay at Beige Village and an educational trip to the Bunso Arboretum Forest Reserve.

The project lasted five months with reading clinics held at the studios of Joy FM, an Accra based radio station, on weekly basis. More than 500 pupils from five communities participated in the reading project.

Mrs Cynthia Lumor, MTN Corporate Services Executive, said: 'Research has shown a direct link between literacy, economic growth and improved health. I would, therefore, like to take the opportunity to encourage everyone to make reading a habit beyond this ceremony'.

She said the project sought to make reading both an educational activity and an enjoyable social venture adding, "we ultimately want the children to acquire the habit of reading for life.'

The MTN/Joy FM Reading Clubs project is an educational initiative designed to boost interest in reading amongst school children between the ages of eight to 14 years.
